In 1918, the National Guard was stationed in Camp McGrath in Aitkin, MN to fight forest fires. Tents were set up for the families of the men who were challenged by the disastrous fire in the Willow River area. In September 1921 a fire wiped out McGrath’s white pine camp including the large sawmill with a planing mill. The size of logging operations was reduced due to the fire.
