December 4, 2020 || 4:00pm CDT || virtual event (zoom)

Dinner with Friends. Roommates and friends gather for a covid-friendly graduation dinner. As the holidays approached, everyone at the table was in need of a morale booster and an act of kindness that said, “I’m here for you and I care about you”. Mutual aid is more than a material act, it is a show of love and compassion towards those that you care about. Seen on the table is a cat, plates full of crumbs from a local Lake Street vendor, Pineda Tacos, and a homemade Tiramisu. Ianna Oatis, December 2020.

Bryn, 2021. Bryn’s sister helps them buzzcut their hair on January 2nd. This was a big step for Bryn in achieving gender affirmation with their non-binary identity. 2020 and the beginning of 2021 have been transformational in many ways. For some of my friends and I it meant coming out as queer to our friends and family. Bryn is a friend of mine that has continued to grow in their queer identity during this time. Reilly Miller, January 2021.

Serving up the Soul. Ms. Peaches scoops a spoonful of her homemade gumbo into a bowl after spending the entire day making the meal. This was one of the meals she cooked for her family, my sister, and I when we stayed with them for three days during our visit to San Marcos, Texas. Reilly Miller, September 2020.

Roses. This image is a visual representation of mutual aid, and how it is unique from charity. Charity functions as one privileged party assists an underprivileged party, whereas mutual aid is structured on even footing. Just like the symmetry in the photograph, mutual aid gives equitable benefit to equal parties, and functions independent of hierarchy. Kaylee Morlan, 2020.

Only 4 Left. This image of anonymous graffiti from downtown Minneapolis in September of 2020 shows the power that is held in communication, and the common goal to tear down systems of oppression. These systems cannot be removed by individuals, but requires the strength of union. Kaylee Morlan, 2020.

Anonymous Love. This photograph, taken at a light rail shelter in downtown Minneapolis, represents a key element of mutual aid, anonymous love. Mutual aid comes from a place of care, respect, and participation in a community, and reaching out a hand to help your neighbors that you may not know. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, this has become a reality for all of us, as we take safety precautions to keep safe people we don't know. Kaylee Morlan, 2020.

It’s time for our next program! This youth photography workshop is part of the ongoing public history project, History for the Future: Exploring the History of Mutual Aid in the Twin Cities through Art, Archives, and Community Dialogue. A free outdoor exhibition featuring the conversations, digital media, and art created in this series of public workshops will be installed May, 2021 in the open lot next to Moon Palace Books in Longfellow Minneapolis.
The dates of the workshop are over the weekend of Friday 12/4 through Monday 12/7. Participants will attend a two hour virtual workshop facilitated by Twin Cities based photographer Clarke Sanders on Friday 12/20 at 4pm. Over the following weekend, participants will explore themes of "mutual aid" and "radical community care" in their personal lives, and will upload their photos to a shared Google Drive by the end of the day on Monday 12/7. An optional follow-up meeting will be scheduled, date TBD, for participants to share photographs and discuss their experiences.
This workshop is open to youth ages 18-24 currently residing in Minnesota AND current MYSS South High Students. Must have access to a personal camera and/or smartphone. All participants will be invited to select which of their photos they wish to include in the History for the Future exhibition in May, 2021. Individuals who wish to include their photography in the exhibition will be credited and compensated for their work.
